My name is Tamia Stringfellow, and I am a first-year MA student at NYU Institute of Fine Arts in the History of Art and Archeology.
I am interested in researching contemporary Puerto Rican Art and looking at another African diaspora in the Caribbean. I am specifically looking to find out how art is impacted by two different stages of colonization in Puerto Rico. Some questions I am focused on include: How do traditions survive two attempts at destruction, and how do artistic traditions and artists respond to these attempts in contemporary society? I am also currently conducting research related to these questions in the UCLA Art History Honors program.
Throughout my academic career at UCLA and NYU, I have been on the Deans' Honor List and have earned a 3.675 or higher every quarter. I have also completed the geographic region and historical period requirements for my degree.
My long-term goal is to become a curator for museums and galleries. I want to focus on putting on shows about feminism, gender identities and sexuality, race relations, and exhibitions of African diaspora cultures in America. While interning at Pence Gallery, I've learned so much about the business side of art and the holes within gallery and museum spaces. I want to create shows and exhibits that are diverse, unique, and contemporary.
Along with my interest in museum work, I also am highly interested in fashion and design. I have always had an eye for fashion and styling while constantly trying to find ways to elevate my looks. I am very inspired by art history and past fashion traditions. Some of my inspirations include Rococo, pop art, gothic, and art nouveau eras. Designing and styling have been a big part of my life and are skills I use while designing floral arrangements as well as my styling.
I am an excited and determined student looking to expand my area of expertise and knowledge in fields that have interested me from a young age.
